Educators: We Need More from Education Technology

Amid sustained growth in an education technology sector competing to put innovative digital tools in front of students, some educators are lamenting a disconnect between the products entrepreneurs are offering and what schools actually need – a rare criticism of an industry often lauded as vital to maximizing student learning potential.

“I think there’s a tendency to see ed tech as the savior of American education, and I do not believe it is,” Eva Moskowitz, founder of New York-based Success Academy Charter Schools, said this week at a conference addressing the role of technology in the classroom. “I do not believe you can get to equality through ed tech

Education in 2018 - Three major challenges facing America's schools and students

Now that President Trump has signed tax cuts into law to strengthen our economy, there’s much more to be done, starting with education reform. Three glaring problems need fixing: our under performing K-12 schools, our politicized universities, and the enormous student debt burden. Candidate Trump promised to revive the American Dream – the idea that whoever you are, you can get ahead, and that your kids will have it better than you did. If the dream is broken, our schools are a big reason. We throw more money at our schools than just about any other country, and what do we get? For our K-12 school system, an honorary membership in the Third World. Not so long ago, we had a superb public school system, but now we trail most countries. In math, we’re 38th in the world among developed countries in terms of how 15 year-old perform

Math is not terrifying: Here’s how students can get over their fear of numbers

It’s important to remember that our understanding of the world around is conditioned by numbers - which play an important part in each and every aspect of our lives, making mathematics an important element of one’s education. However, many individuals tend to experience an intense fear whenever they encounter mathematics in their everyday life - something we could call math anxiety. The group that also tends to be most affected by math anxiety also represents one of the largest population of its learners in society: children. Research identifies that the origins of math anxiety can be traced to that period when the fundamental aspects of math are taught. During this time, a set of negative experiences are created around the subject that work to heighten the fear of math in children. Rote learning and standardised methods of teaching are mostly responsible for such experiences, leading to students losing interest in the subject. By standardising

Both Educators And Students Are More Stressed Than Ever, According To New Studies

Overcrowded classrooms, high workloads, and yes, the Trump administration, have all contributed to rising stress rates in both teachers and students.
Roughly 61 percent of educators said their work was “always” or “often” stressful, compared with American workers, in general, citing their work was stressful 30 percent of the time, according to a new survey released by the American Federation of Teachers and the advocacy group Badass Teachers Association. The survey included responses from 5,000 educators and showed higher rates of stress when compared with a similar survey from 2015.

IITs turn down govt proposal to let NTA hold JEE (Advanced)

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have shot down the government’s proposal to permit the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct JEE (Advanced). The NTA, approved by the union cabinet on November 10, is envisioned as the largest exam-conducting body in the country. In a meeting of IIT directors on December 15 in Chennai, the institutes decided against the NTA’s involvement in JEE (Advanced), which is the gateway to securing a seat in the 23 premier engineering schools.

Students voice: How to pick a career you actually like

In India, the foundation of career-building starts right after class 10, where a student has to select mainly between science, commerce and arts subjects. This is followed by choosing to go for the ‘right’ type of graduation and/or post-graduation degrees at ‘appropriate’ colleges after class 12, searching for the ‘correct’ job(s) afterwards and finally ending at accomplishing the same.
Whenever asked about choosing a career, great people like APJ Abdul Kalam (former President of India), Steve Jobs (co-founder: Apple Inc.), Priyanka Chopra (Indian actress), etc have insisted on “doing what you love.” They have always emphasised that the key to finding the ‘right’ career is to first decide on ‘what you’re passionate about’ and then going for a job-plan that ‘matches this passion’ (called the Passion Hypothesis in American society).
But, is it always so easy? Is it always so simple to figure out what we students are really passionate about? And above all, is it always about our passion? The one-word answer to all these questions is ‘no’ and there are various reasons for the same.

Bitcoin Rally Surprises Again, Hits Near $18,000

Bitcoin zoomed to another record high of around $18,000 on the Bitstamp bitcoin exchange on Friday, higher by 9 percent. This happened despite the fact that warnings grew over the risks of investing in the highly volatile cryptocurrency. The bitcoin's staggering recent price rises - more than 1,700 per cent since the start of the year - have driven worries that the market is a bubble that could burst in spectacular fashion. Bitcoin has surged almost 80 percent so far in December alone, putting it on track for its best month in percentage terms since December 2013.
Outages on some of the world's biggest exchanges this week, which left millions of investors unable to access their funds during periods when trading volumes are high, have also fuelled concerns about the fragility of the market's infrastructure.

Five Things that you should know about the rise of bitcoin

1. Bitcoin reached as high as $17,900 on Friday on the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp exchange.

2. While bitcoin has added 20% of its value since Monday, trading has been slightly calmer than the wild price swings the market has seen in past few weeks, with volatility lower since the launch of bitcoin futures from Cboe Global Markets

Science Has Just Uncovered the World's Easiest Hack for Faster Learning

We've all spent a minimum of a decade informal education, so you'd think that in all that time, we'd have at least mastered the most basic principles of how to study efficiently. But study after study shows that's not true. Many of the best scientifically validated tips and tricks for faster learning are never taught in school.
Take a dead simple suggestion uncovered by researchers out of Canada's University of Waterloo as one example. The research, recently published in the journal Memory, showed that compared with silently reading the material or listening to it read aloud, reading out loud yourself can give you between a five and fifteen percent boost in learning speed.
"Say the information that you want to remember out loud and you'll have a higher likelihood of remembering it. Yes, it's that simple!" psychologist and study co-author Colin MacLeod enthused in an email interview. And while five percent might not sound like a massive improvement, given how incredibly easy it is to just open your mouth and speak, MacLeod insists this study hack is definitely

Actually, Facebook has given an option to log in, which is called 'Login with your phone'. It appears on the login page. Users can log into Facebook by scanning the QR through its features.

Kartik claimed that this QR can be misused because this QR code is not linked to the user id, which has scanned it and the hacker can send it to someone who generated the URL from this QR code. Your account can be accessed by clicking on this URL.Facebook's new feature is 'Login with your Phone' option. This feature gives QR code to the user, which

Education should inculcate values: CM

The education should not be confined only to seeking employment but it should also be inculcating cultural values in the children. The Solution to Our Education Crisis Might be AI:

Tomorrow’s Teachers:

Robots will replace teachers by 2027.

That’s the bold claim that Anthony Seldon, a British education expert, made at the British Science Festival in September.
Seldon may be the first to set such a specific deadline for the automation of education, but he’s not the first to note technology’s potential to replace human workers. Whether the “robots” take the form of artificially intelligent (AI) software programs or humanoid machines, research suggests that technology is poised to automate a huge proportion of jobs worldwide, disrupting the global economy and leaving millions unemployed.
